Native Hawaiians rebel against the Bayonet Constitution

Daily newspapers printed stories about the cultural inferiority of Native Hawaiians and the economic superiority of haole (White foreigners) to justify seizure of power and spur on calls for annexation by the U.S. Native Hawaiians revolt, seeking a more appropriate constitution, but American troops are called in to “restore order,” setting the stage for the eventual overthrow of the Hawaiian government in 1893 (Trask, 1999).
